1795<$10> 13 Leaves AU58 NGC. Breen-6830, B. 1-A, Taraszka-1, R.3. The 5 is over the bust, and star 11 is near the Y. The reverse stem end is centered beneath the last A in AMERICA. This beautiful 1795 eagle is a virtual match in terms of color and eye appeal for the AU50 1795 half eagle in this same sale, although this piece is a touch finer in terms of technical grade. Both coins would form the basis for a superb type collection of early (or first year of type) gold coins. The eagle was the gold coin of choice for foreign trade from 1795 until 1804--even more so than the half eagle, since counting a given quantity required twice as many coins of the half eagle. About 130,000 eagle coins were minted during that timeframe. With a huge face value of more than a month's wage for many workers, these eagle coins served almost exclusively as a medium for international debt repayments. After 1804, when coinage of the eagle (and silver dollar) ceased, the half eagle took over that role.
The present beautiful near-Mint State specimen boasts lemon-yellow surfaces with subtle hints of greenish-gold. Perhaps the most striking feature about this coin, however, is its deep, radiant, and exuberant mint luster, which makes the coin appear fairly prooflike, and altogether lovely. Just a touch of highpoint rub (or perhaps cabinet friction) separates this coin from full Mint State. The strike is nearly as bold as the luster, with just a whisper of softness seen at the center highpoints of each side. Finally, mentioning any abrasions would be to overstate their importance.
As a first year of issue, the 1795 eagle was saved in sufficient quantities that collectors more than 200 years later can be grateful for their existence. It is certain that any collector who obtains this delectable specimen will be. Population: 21 in 58, 45 finer (4/06).
