1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves AU55 PCGS
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves AU55 PCGS. B-5, BB-27, R.1. Early die state. The obverse is immediately identified by the diagonal bar near the top hair curl, all the identification that is needed for this plentiful 1795 dollar variety, as the obverse die was not used with any other reverse dies.
This is a splendid example with strong luster, traces of wear limited to the highpoints, and appealing album toning. Both sides have pale gold and ivory at the centers, surrounded by concentric rings of lilac, blue, green, and amber toning. The only noticeable blemish is a thin depression across the eagle's breast. The surfaces are otherwise pristine with a few minuscule handling marks.
Die states of this variety recorded in the Bowers-Borckardt reference are slightly redundant. Die State I is the perfect reverse. Die State II has a "crack just beginning from end of the left stem to rim." Die State III has a reverse crack "from the end of the left stem to border." This "die crack" is seen on all or nearly all known examples of the variety, and may actually be a fine engraving line. If it is, then States I, II, and III are all the same. If it is a die crack, then States II and III are the same. All of the later die states are recorded as "not seen by the author."

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
