1795$1 Flowing Hair, Silver Plug Fine 12 PCGS. B-3, BB-11, R.5. This much scarcer variety is easily distinguished by the 8 left and 8 right berry alignment on the wreath, these being the only dies used to strike the B-3. The silver plug is readily evident in the center of the obverse and reverse, this being highly unusual. In most cases we have seen, the plug is hardly detectable and only visible on one side.
Evenly worn, the features are still well outlined with Liberty's eye, nose, and mouth fully defined, and several feathers are evident on each of the eagle's wings. Light gray patina covers each side of this original coin and is accented with darker gray shades in the protected areas. Some green encrustation is buried in the recesses around the left side of the wreath. For future identification purposes, a vertical mark extends downward from Liberty's ear to the midpoint of her neck, and a horizontal one extends from just above her ear to her eye.
As recently as ten years ago, Silver Plug 1795 Dollars were not well known and little premium was attached to them. That situation has changed dramatically in recent years, though. The AU50 B-7 we offered in our 2002 Central States Sale brought an astonishing $34,500, this being a much more common die pairing. This piece offers the serious collector a more affordable opportunity to acquire this very scarce, unusual striking variant from the early days of the U.S. mint. Lot:7309
