When Henry DeSaussure accepted the Mint director post, he announced his plans to get more gold coins in circulation, and to improve coinage designs. Accordingly, he approached Gilbert Stuart, the talented and well-known portrait artist to prepare a design from Mrs. William Bingham, his model. John Eckstein of Rhode Island prepared plaster sketches from the models and these were used to make device punches. Eckstein received a payment of $30 for his efforts.
Several students of the series have attempted to estimate the mintage with various results. Early Mint records reflect the mintage of various denominations during a particular time period (such as 1795) but tell nothing of the quantity of coins bearing a given date. Walter Breen suggested a mintage of 42,738 coins, R.W. Julian implied that the mintage totaled 78,238 coins, and Dave Bowers suggests 110,000 pieces in his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia.
The late obverse die state has the die break in Liberty's hair fully displayed. The design features are bold and lustrous surfaces retain prooflike finish. Both sides have splendid sea-green, gold, and lilac toning. The types are fully defined and the impression is well-centered. Faint adjustment marks along the borders are confined to the dentils and outer margin.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
