1795 1/2P Washington North Wales Halfpenny, Plain Edge AU58 PCGS. Baker-34. This is quite possibly one of the most challenging coins that this cataloger has ever described. It is technically Mint State, and a nice one, retaining traces of original color on the reverse. These pieces were deliberately made from crude, poorly detailed dies so that they would have the appearance of old, worn copper, even when they were first struck. For most examples, even a brief stint in circulation would impart the appearance of a low-grade coin. The chance to examine such a high grade survivor reveals die details that are seldom seen, including fine die lines on the surfaces on each side.
The obverse of this specimen has smooth olive-brown surfaces with traces of steel and mahogany toning. Washington's portrait is completely outlined but lacks central detail, primarily because little such detail existed in the original die. Fine die finishing lines cover the entire obverse surface and are clearly visible in the field. The reverse is unusual and distinctive with "stripes" of lime-green, yellowish-orange, mahogany, and pale brown. Like the obverse, the reverse of this piece has extreme weakness of strike, again due partly to a lack of design details on the die. Raised die finishing lines are also evident across the reverse surface. Listed on page 80 of the 2007 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
