1795 1/2 C Lettered Edge MS63 Brown PCGS. C-1, B-1, R.2. Manley Die State 2 with "a gentle bulge" through AME on the reverse. Breen Die State IV with a tiny rim break joining three dentils over ED and the previously mentioned bulge through AME. This is a wonderful example with sharp design details and excellent centering, the obverse and reverse borders full and complete. The surfaces have satiny luster with attractive olive, chocolate brown, and lighter tan color on both sides. Close examination reveals hints of original mint red, although this is nearly imperceptible. A few insignificant hairlines and other abrasions are evident, along with a few original planchet flakes. A tiny corrosion spot is tucked into the corner formed by the upper edge of the cap and the hair. Several high quality examples of this variety exist, including the present piece that is easily within the top dozen known pieces.
Including both lettered edge and plain edge pieces, there are six known varieties for the 1795 half cents, as well as a few additional sub-varieties that are distinguished by edge type or planchet stock. Although the main designs for both the obverse and reverse were produced by a single device punch for each side, there are still four distinct types listed in the Guide Book. The obverse device punch included the head of Liberty as well as the cap. The date, LIBERTY, pole, and border were entered by hand in each die, accounting for the variance that is fully documented today. The reverse device punch for the wreath was supplemented by additional hand engraved details.
Mint records indicated that the first 1795 half cents were coined near the end of the year with a delivery of 14,800 coins on October 27 and another 10,800 on December 1. Walter Breen notes that all of these coins were coined at the old standard of 104 grains, and all were the lettered edge type, either C-1 or C-2a. The 1795 plain edge half cents were not coined until the next year. EAC 55. Population: 3 in 63, 3 finer (3/07).
From The Temecula Collection, Part Two.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
