1794 S-33 R6 VG10+
Medium steel brown and chocolate. Lightly cleaned and retoned. The surfaces are smooth, void of roughness, planchet flaws, or verdigris. Just scattered contact marks including a rim nick over ER in LIBERTY, a pair of dull nicks in the hair below ER, a light horizontal scratch from the ear into the hair, and a thin diagonal nick on the neck under the ear lobe. The reverse is really nice with trivial marks inside the wreath and strong details on all but ONE CENT and the inside part of the wreath due to swelling associated with the later die state. We have seen many early cents with far more significant scratches that received a "real" grade from the major grading services. M-LDS, Heck die state 4, Breen state V, with all 6 of the "Wheelspoke" cracks on the reverse, but the crack from the L in LIBERTY to the cap has not formed. A very nice example of this classic rarity in the series of 1794 cents, a variety that is plagued with net graded examples due to significant environmental damage. This one is clearly above average in that department. It has been hidden away for many decades in an old collection; not seen by Bland or Noyes. Our grade is net VG10+.
