1794 S$1 VF35 NGC. B-1, BB-1, R.4. A few individual markers on each side of this pleasing dollar positively identify its pedigree to a 1910 coin auction, the only time it has been publicly offered, to the best of our knowledge. Nearly a century ago, Thomas Elder described this briefly: "Head of Liberty undraped. Standing eagle. About Fine. Extremely rare." It is important to understand that grading standards are much different today than during the early 20th century. The former owner, Peter Mougey (1841-1908) was a grocer by trade, and also a coin collector who quietly amassed an important cabinet. An early ANA member (number 47), he was little known in his time. Today, he is remembered primarily by large cent collectors. In addition to his large cents and this 1794 dollar, Mougey had an 1802 half dime, a nearly complete date set of early half eagles including most issues from 1813 to 1834, and an extensive run of proof sets from 1842 to 1906, which included a run of gold proof sets from 1882 to 1903.
This example has a sharp strike for the issue, with the date and stars at the lower left all boldly defined, although the left obverse border disappears over part of the circumference of this piece. A tiny dent can be seen just right of star 8, and a long, thin scratch from the top of OF to the top of AM are both useful features to positively identify this example. A few other light scratches appear on each side, along with adjustment marks near the borders, but none of these blemishes are significant. Overall, this is a highly attractive, moderately circulated lilac-gray example that should more than satisfy most collectors.
Ex: Peter Mougey (Thomas Elder, 9/1910), lot 940, $150.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
