1794[S$1]--Light Scratches, Old Cleaning--AU58 SEGS.
1794<S$1>--Light Scratches, Old Cleaning--AU58 SEGS. Mint records indicate that only 1,758 silver dollars were minted in the initial year of production, 1794. Of that number probably no more than 130-140 pieces are believed extant today in all grades. Needless to say, most are nowhere near as well defined as this piece. The central portions are boldly brought up and the coin was struck on a rough planchet. As always, the lower left portion of the obverse (specifically the first few stars and the lower digits in the date) are weakly defined, as is the left side of the reverse. This, of course, is from the coin being struck from misaligned dies, as was almost all the mintage. But we must point out that strike-wise this piece is far superior to almost all other 1794 dollars in existence. Close examination reveals numerous shallow scratches in the fields, most notably the left obverse field, which is also faintly tooled. A few minor adjustment marks are also located over the figure of Liberty. The fields and more recessed areas of the design have taken on a light gold coloration while the higher portions of the coin show steel-gray patina. A very well defined example of this numismatic classic and the first year of issue for the basic monetary unit of the newly-formed United States.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
