1856<1C> PR65 NGC. Snow-3. This lovely Gem has the recut 5 in the date associated with Snow's Obverse 1, but the die scratch beneath the right ribbon end is not evident. However, it is not either of the other known die pairings for Obverse 1 (Snow-1, tilted ONE CENT; and Snow-10, Low Leaves) and repunching on the E in CENT is present on its upper right edge. Snow-3 is the second most common die marriage of 1856 Flying Eagle Cents, but carries a premium over Snow-9 because it is scarcer, and because Snow-9 is considered a proof-only variety, while most examples of Snow-3 are considered business strikes by specialists. NGC and PCGS no longer certify any 1856 Flying Eagle Cents as business strikes, but encapsulate them as proofs regardless of surfaces and Snow variety. The bold strike, the absence of strike doubling, and the moderately reflective fields suggest that the present piece is a proof example of Snow-3, rather than a business strike. An intricately struck Gem, the fields display light honey-gold color while the luminous devices are tan in hue. The fields are lightly mirrored, and are void of contact. A faint and fully retained lamination, as made, is near 1 o'clock and is accompanied by slightly deeper gray color. Envelope Included.
