1794 Liberty Cap Cent. Starred reverse. PCGS VG8
Glossy dark chocolate and steel brown. No corrosion, verdigris, or major marks. The best identifying defect is a shallow planchet flake just left of the nostril. The obverse is considerably sharper than the reverse, as usual for this variety, and would grade VG10 if not for a few light rim bumps, the strongest over R in LIBERTY. The reverse is strong at UNITED and the fraction, but AMERIC, ONE, and CENT are faint at best. Slightly more than half the 94 tiny stars remain visible, and most of those are very clear. Late die state with swelling over much of the reverse, and this swelling is responsible for the weakness at AMERIC and the upper half of the wreath. An attractive example of this famous die variety. EAC grade G6. The Starred Reverse feature is noted on the PCGS label.
Superior 1/25/04:1215-Mike Iatesta.
