1794<H10C> XF Details, Damaged, Improperly Cleaned NCS. V-1, LM-1, R.6. This variety is quickly recognized by the obverse, with the third curl joined to the upper inside point of star 2. The obverse die is perfect while the reverse has a short crack from a dentil into the field between A and M. This example has been lightly cleaned with light silver surfaces that still retain pale gold toning near the borders. Both sides have moderate scrapes and scratches. A imperfection on the rim at 7 o'clock may be a clipped planchet, although it looks more like a rim bruise. This is still an important opportunity for the advanced collector, despite the imperfections. LM-1 is the rarest variety of the year. It is generally conceded that this was the first die variety of 1794, struck in early 1795 as there were no half dimes actually produced in 1794.
Ex: Seneca Sale (Heritage, 5/1984), lot 676.
From The William A.
