1794<H10C> AU58 PCGS. V-2, LM-2, R.5. All of the 1794 half dimes were actually struck in 1795. Mint records prove this as the first delivery warrant for half dimes was dated March 30, 1795, recording a total of 7,756 coins. The most recent earlier delivery warrant was dated March 3, 1795, thus pinpointing the actual time that these coins were struck. The next shipment of half dimes to the Mint Treasurer consisted of 13,100 coins on a warrant dated June 12, 1795. Careful study of die use, known as the emission sequence, reveals that the 1794 and 1795 dies were used interchangeably, so it is not possible to determine the exact mintage of each date. This delightful example has nearly full luster beneath gunmetal and steel toning with iridescent highlights. Faint abrasions and scratches are consistent with the grade. The lower hair curls and the left wing are both weakly struck, typical for the variety. Population: 12 in 58, 40 finer (7/06).
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
