1794 Flowing Hair Half PCGS VG8
Half Dollars 1794 Flowing Hair. Overton-101a. Rarity-4. PCGS graded Very Good 8. Clean surfaces, nice original medium gray patina with "rubbed silver" highlights, the natural condition of one of these early pieces that has never been messed with or cleaned. Excellent rims, there being but a single tiny bump at the 3 o'clock position on the obverse; a few light marks, hardly noticeable. Clear date, stars, and legends. In spite of having a low mintage [23,464] there were a total of six obverses and six reverse dies used during the production, combining to create ten distinct varieties. In the early years, the master die produced only the bust on the obverse and the eagle on the reverse. The stars, lettering, date, laurel branches, leaves and berries were punched onto the working die by hand using puncheons and graving tools. This handwork produced the individuality of each working die. All of the varieties of 1794 are rare or very rare with the exception of this Overton-101, which is nonetheless scarce. The two most notable features are (a) star 1 pierces the lowest curl and (b) berries arranged 10 left, 11 right, this being the only reverse with 21 berries. All have a die crack from the edge to a pair of leaves below the first S.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
