May 26, 1794-Dated Federal Period, Manuscript Document Signed, “John Briggs,” 1 page, front and back, fine laid paper, measuring 15.75” x 12.5”, Choice Very Fine.
This antique 18th century Document is a Dolphin, a Ship of 23 tons built in Freetown, Massachusetts in the year 1782. In this Document John Briggs is selling one quarter part of his Ship to Augustus Chase for Eighteen Pounds lawful money. The Document is signed and sealed by John Briggs. The Document is also signed by Lucy Carter. There are also two official stamps on the left edge of the document. Both John Briggs (1721-1791) and Augustus Chase (1753-1839) were owners or part owners in numerous vessels that sailed from Freetown, Massachusetts and Fall River harbor. Both men were also Masters of numerous vessels. This document is completely hand written on hand laid paper with a British watermark. Three original seals still present and appear fully intact. Folds, with some minor paper loss, and expected age toning, else very fine condition. A very scarce, original bill of sale for an ownership portion of a Revolutionary War Era Sloop.
