1794 50C VG8 PCGS. O-103, High R.5. Even though this is not one of the "impossible" 1794 half dollar varieties, it is clearly a major rarity within the date. In fact, the only 1794 die marriage that can reasonably be classified as a common variety is O-101. There are currently 11 different die combinations known for the date, with a sum total population of just over 500 coins, based on current rarity ratings. Approximately 300 of those are O-101, another 60 are O-104, a further 60 are O-105, and just over 100 pieces represent the other eight varieties combined!
Back to this O-103 die marriage, there are only about 35 to 40 pieces known, given the current High R.5 rarity. Although this example is in lower grade with considerable wear, it could easily be classified as a "perfect" coin for the grade. Other than the usual signs of handling that accompany a well circulated silver piece, the surfaces have natural deep gray color with lighter tan on the devices. The strike is nicely centered on the flan, with strong peripheral details. The eagle is shallow but fully outlined. For the advanced specialist, this offering presents an extremely important opportunity. It appears that this coin is actually a Condition Census candidate, with few finer quality examples known. The finest known example is certified as AU55, and was offered by us in our Platinum Night sale at the January 2007 FUN auction. Next in line are a couple VF grade pieces, a couple more that grade Fine, and then this piece. Most of the higher grade pieces known also have one or more problems from minor to severe. The opportunity to acquire this coin, completely void of such problems, is the stuff of numismatic dreams.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
