1794 50C VF35 NGC
1794 50C VF35 NGC. O-102, High R.6. In the fourth edition of the Overton half dollar reference, Don Parsley lists the Census of O-102 as 40, 12, 12, 8, 4. The die combination is very rare, with only 13 or 14 examples known in all grades. Stephen Herrman lists just nine auction appearances of this variety since 1995, including repeat appearances of just six coins. This is an impressive example with lovely original toning and traces of underlying luster. A few tiny marks on the obverse are barely worth description.

The following is a record of those pieces known to us:

1. XF40. Recorded by Don Parsley in the third and fourth editions of the Overton reference. Possibly the same piece that is illustrated (reverse only) in Beistle.

2. VF35. The present specimen, not previously known. This example has been graded VF35 on two different occasions by NGC, accounting for two of the three VF coins on the firm's Census report.

3. VF. Another example graded by NGC.

4. Fine 15 PCGS. Eliasberg Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1661; Goldberg Coins (2/2001), lot 1720; Westmoreland Collection. This coin will be offered by us early next year.

5. Fine 12 NGC. David Hirt (Pine Tree, 11/1975), lot 554; David Davis (8/1980); Jules Reiver (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 22473. Possibly one of the "12" coins recorded by Overton.

6. VG10. Heritage (9/1988), lot 649. The attribution is assumed accurate, although only the obverse was plated in the catalog. Possibly one of the "12" coins recorded by Overton.
7. Good 6/VG8. Coin Galleries (8/1989), lot 1515. The plate coin in the third and fourth editions of Overton, and probably the piece graded "8" in the Overton/Parsley Census.

8. Good 6 PCGS. Sheridan Downey (5/2001), lot 197. This coin, or one of the following, may be the coin graded "4" by Parsley.

9. Net Good 4 ANACS. Bowers and Merena (6/2003), lot 543; Heritage (2/2004), lot 649; Heritage (10/2006), lot 1106.

10. AG3/Good 4. Brilliant Collection (Bowers and Merena, 1/1992), lot 2; Sheridan Downey (1/1995), lot 1.

In addition to these 10 pieces, the Overton Census suggests that three or four others might exist.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
