1794<50C> O-104, R.5--Scratched--NCS. Fine Details. An early die state, this example doesn't show evidence of the obverse die crack usually seen through star 3. However, the absence of this die crack may be a result of wear, as examples only exist with the die crack, according to current literature. If an example of O-104 is located without the die crack, it would represent the earlier appearance of a remarriage, with O-103 struck between early and late states of this variety. The Overton-104 variety is attributed by its reverse, which has 9 berries on the left side of the wreath, and 10 berries to the right.
The present example features medium gray-green and deeper sea-green peripheries. Moderate pinscratches occur over the obverse, and a heavy scratch is evident in the lower right obverse field. Nicely centered, most of the dentilation shows on the reverse, and along the left and upper borders of the obverse. Some of the right side peripheral devices are missing on each side, either through wear or incomplete striking. Although this is the second most plentiful of all 1794 varieties, it is difficult to locate in higher grades. In fact, the highest grade offered at auction is just XF40, according to AMBPR.
No pedigree information included. Envelope Included.
