1794 50C --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Fine Details. O-106 1794[50C] O-106, Low R.6--Improperly Cleaned
1794<50C> O-106, Low R.6--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Fine Details. Holed and plugged, although not described as such by NCS. The digit 4 and star 15 have been reengraved. It appears that the final S in STATES and the left side of the O may have been strengthened as well. The entire surface has been retoned to conceal the work. Steel-gray color mixes with bluish-green shadings on each side. An early die state of this marriage, lacking any trace of the eventual heavy die crack across the top third of the obverse. Typical peripheral adjustment marks are evident on the lower and left portions of the obverse. While only 23,464 examples of this imminently collectible, first year issue were struck, no fewer than 11 die combinations were used; six obverse and seven reverse dies all contributed to this slight mintage. Most 1794 Halves are O-101 or O-104; Overton-106 is a rare die variety and the present lot provides an affordable opportunity to acquire an example.
Ex: William Wetzler (12/1982). Envelope Included.
