1794<50C> O-105a, R.5. Good 6 NGC. While the 1792 half disme must be considered the first circulating federal coinage of the United States made under the Mint Act of April 2, 1792, they were struck on a private press before the first Mint was built. The 1794 silver dollar was the first circulating silver issue designed and produced at the new Mint by the designer, Robert Scot, and the Chief Coiner, Henry Voigt. Soon after the October introduction of silver coinage, the first half dollars were produced, just six weeks later.
This is a late die state with the center of the reverse die considerably sunken, causing a noticeable bulge on the coin. The bisecting die crack described by Overton, from the first T in STATES, to ER of AMERICA, is visible in both locations, although not across the eagle. Well struck for the issue with silver-gray, cobalt, and deep violet-gray patina. There are minor imperfections on both sides, with noticeable light pin scratches being the most obvious. The piece is typical for the grade, with the major design details still visible, except near the reverse center, where most of the eagle has been worn away. In our opinion this coin is considerably undergraded. Without understanding the nuances of die states and how they can affect the grade, it is not possible to accurately grade a coin. In this case, the late die state, with the center of the reverse bulged, caused the appearance of excessive wear at that point. All other detail, including the entire obverse and the peripheral reverse, suggest a grade of at least Very Good.
Ex: Kagin's (9/1981), lot 839. Envelope Included.
