1794<50C> O-103, High R.5. Good 6 NGC. Obverse star 1 penetrates the lowest of Liberty's hair curls, and the reverse has 18 berries, 9 apiece on the left and right sides of the wreath. Die state evidence supports a strong case that O-103 was actually the first half dollar die combination struck, late in the year. Obverse 2 was used only for O-103 and O-104, with two reverse dies that were not used for any other varieties. As the remaining 1794 varieties form a single, long sequence of obverse and reverse die combinations, which carries over into 1795, it is assumed that Obverse 2 was the first obverse die to be used. This example, from an apparently perfect obverse die, was coined before O-104. As these two varieties are not die-linked with any others, they were very likely the first two varieties coined in 1794.
All of the design elements remain clearly visible and fully outlined, with some additional internal detail on each side. The appearance is one of slate-gray shades, deepening to charcoal-gray and sea-green near the borders. Slight damage to the obverse rim is noted at several locations, and the same side reveals a few wispy pin scratches across the portrait of Liberty. One of only 23,464 pieces produced, and likely the first Half Dollar in U.S. coinage history.
Ex: George D. Hatie Collection (Bowers and Merena, 8/1983), lot 715. Envelope Included.
