1794 50C Good 4 PCGS
1794 50C Good 4 PCGS. O-105a, R.5. The obverse die appears to remain perfect without any defects. The reverse has a prominent central bulge, with a die crack through the upright of the first T in STATES, and later emerging through the wing tip to the border between E and R. It is assumed that this is a single bisecting die crack, although the bulge obliterates proof that it is just one crack. This is the important late die state, and one of just a few such pieces known. The population is certainly less than 10 examples known for the cracked reverse state.
Both sides exhibit adequate details, although the central reverse is nearly smooth from the die bulge (technically a sinking die with the bulge on the coin). This characteristic gives the appearance of wear at the central reverse, although the peripheral details suggest a higher grade, perhaps as high as VG8. The surfaces have deep gray color with hints of champagne and pale blue color across nearly the entire obverse and reverse. A tiny reverse rim bruise is located at 6 o'clock.
Haseltine-4; later than Beistle 3-Ea; Overton-11; Hilt 3-C; PCGS# 6051; Encyclopedia-4550.
Ex: Heritage (3/2005), lot 5697.
From The Westmoreland County Collection of Early Bust Halves, 1794-1807.

Coin Engraver: Robert Scot

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
