1794<50C> O-102, Low R.7. Fine 12 NGC. Stephen Herrman reported that just 11 or 12 examples are known, making this a low R.7 variety. The finest to appear in auction graded just Fine 15, although the third edition of Overton lists an XF40 example. The plate coin in that reference is not quite the equal of this example. The only 1794 reverse with 9 berries to the left, and 8 to the right. C and A in AMERICA are recut. The reverse die carried over to the 1795 coinage, and was used for 1795 O-117, 120, 121, and 122.
The obverse has a faint crack through star 6, and clash marks over stars 6, 7, and 8. These clash marks are from a different reverse, that of the O-101 variety. We believe this to be the first example of the O-102 variety that we have ever offered at public auction. It is a pleasingly smooth, well detailed piece offering lovely light to charcoal-gray toning variations that deepen toward the edges. The frequently-seen pin scratches are almost nonexistent, and there are no severe abrasions. A shallow indentation, just to the right of Liberty's mouth, serves as a convenient pedigree marker. Considering the rarity factor of this die variety, we are pleased to be able to offer such a visually appealing example.
Today's collector of Early Half Dollars, through 1839, has an excellent resource compiled by Stephen Herrman.
