1794 1C Talbot, Allum & Lee Mule XF40 Uncertified.<p>Liberty and Commerce/ Earl Howe Mule. Breen-1047, D&H Hampshire-25. Thomas Wyon's Liberty and Commerce die was used for tokens for New York merchants Talbot, Allum, & Lee but it was also muled with a variety of other dies. This particular combination is always seen with a significant die break through Howe's name and a weak strike, resulting in little detail in the centers even on the highest graded specimens. This piece shows only a bit of wear and still retains lots of mint luster. When graded by degree of wear and remaining luster, this piece is actually closer to a technical AU50 grade, but because of the softness of strike we have netted the grade to a level that is more in line with its value.Ex: Everson and Faught Collections (Bowers and Merena, 6/88), lot 631, where it realized at $330.From the Joseph M.
