The 1794 Starred Reverse is one of the best known and most collectible of all Large Cent varieties, and certainly one of the easiest to identify for the non-specialist, with its 94 tiny stars punched mostly between and sometimes on top of the reverse denticles. <BR>There are several theories that have been put forward to explain the 94 stars. Breen believes it may have been an anti-counterfeiting device, while Sheldon thought it could have just been the result of an idle hour at the mint. The explanation we like best is that it somehow commemorates the striking of cents that year as the number of stars, 94, corresponds with the last two digits in the year 1794. <BR>The Starred Reverse is also undoubtedly the most desirable of all the 1794 Cents. It was first commented on before 1850 and came to the attention of collectors in 1877. By now surely all specimens are known with no new examples having surfaced since 1951. All surviving Starred Reverse Cents are low grade with the finest known being a single XF 40. The next six coins that follow in the Condition Census range from VF 25 to VG 10. The pedigree of this example is uncertain at the present time, although specialists in early Large Cents may have information not known to the Heritage cataloging team. The stars for which this die pairing gets its name are clearly discernible around at least 70 percent of the reverse. On the obverse, here the less important side, the portrait displays stronger details than the assessed grade, with crisply defined hair curls on all but the highest points. There is a uniform porosity on each side, almost an obligatory feature on Starred Reverse Cents, and ancient scratches are more numerous on the reverse, the most noticeable being located on Liberty's forehead and through the left side of the wreath to the C in CENT. These nearly expected deficiencies aside, the presently offered specimen is one of the finer examples of this famous rarity to come along in years and should be one of the more highly anticipated lots in the sale. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed>No Prior Data Recorded </TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
