1794<1C> Starred Reverse Fine 12 NGC. S-48, R.5. Every since it was discovered in the late 1870s, the Starred Reverse has been a popular and desirable variety. The reverse has 94 tiny stars between, and sometimes under, the dentils. These tiny five-pointed stars are smaller than the individual dentils that form the border. This is one of the most famous large cent varieties known. Today, nearly 70 examples are known, although substantially fewer were known to Sheldon. When Penny Whimsy was published in 1958, it was still considered R.6 with less than 30 examples known. At the time, Sheldon commented: "Collectors mention it with religious awe."
According to our consignor, this example is a new specimen that was recently discovered, found last year in a Philadelphia attic during a remodeling project. The surfaces are a pleasing medium olive with lighter tan on the devices. A small obverse rim bruise at 9 o'clock, and a few old, shallow scrapes at the central reverse will serve to track the future pedigree of this specimen. The reverse border is strong and complete around most of the circumference, but weak over AMERICA. EAC 8.
