1794 1C Head of 1794 XF40 NGC. S-28, Die State II
1794<1C> Head of 1794 XF40 NGC. S-28, Die State II, High R.2. Maris' "Ornate Variety," which features a full, rounded cheek of Liberty and hair that terminates in eight distinct points of "excellently proportioned length" according to Henry Chapman. Sheldon's varieties 27 and 28 share a common reverse die that is called the Single Leaf reverse and is immediately identified by a single outer leaf below RI of AMERICA. This particular coin has wonderful, light brown color with a faint undertone of reddish patina. Numerous small abrasions are scattered over each side and there is a long, shallow scratch in the right obverse field. The only noticeable marks are in the center of the reverse, but these seem more severe than they actually are because they are blended in with the vertical die crack in that same area. An early die state with light clash marks but no die cracks. The die chip of State I is no longer present.
Purchased privately at the 1973 ANA from Larry Goldberg; Jack H. Robinson (1/4/84); Denis W. Loring; Wes Rasmussen Collection (Heritage, 1/05), lot 3034.
