1794<1C> Head of 1794. S-22, B-6, R.1. AU53 NGC. VF35 EAC. Normal Planchet. Struck on a planchet of normal diameter, 28.8 mm. The famous Mounds Reverse, also sometimes known as the Bent Lock variety. The sixth hair lock, counting from the bottom, is bent sharply downward near its tip. This feature, which combined with the lock immediately below is reminiscent of an eagle's beak, is diagnostic for the variety. The mounds on the reverse are visible at the lower right part of the wreath below RICA, at the lower left part of the wreath below IT, and at the top of the wreath above ONE. This is a difficult variety to grade. The hair is flat on nearly every known example, even those considered to be Mint State. While the present example is graded by us as VF35 on the EAC scale, other observers could just as easily call it VF30 or XF40. The surfaces are exceptional with dark olive and brown color, accented by golden-tan, faded from original mint red. Hints of luster remain.
Ex: Howard R. Newcomb (3/5/1938); Willard C.
