1794<1C> Head of 1794 AU53 PCGS. S-30, High R.1. Dr. Maris originally named this the "Amatory Face" in the 1869 edition of his reference but later changed the name to "Amiable Face" in his 1870 edition. Called the first Marred Field by most others, the figure of Liberty seems to smile. Other diagnostics include a small die chip in the lower left (facing) obverse field, and the long tails on the R of AMERICA and the right (facing) ribbon end. The design elements are nicely defined, though the hair curls at Liberty's ear exhibit flatness. Light to medium brown patina is seen on the obverse, while the reverse is slightly darker, and also displays a touch of roughness in the fields. The devices are relatively well centered, and virtually all of the dentilation shows, with the reverse dentils being quite coarse, as is typical for the variety.
From The Melrose Bay Collection.
