1794 1C Head of 1793--Blundered Edge Letters--Good 4 ANACS. S-19a, Low R.6. An error at the Mint resulted in the edge of this important Cent reading ONEONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR. As a major variety, the 1794 Head of 1793 is one of the rarest in the Liberty Cap series. Noyes (1991) lists only eight die marriages of the 1794 Head of 1793, two of which are considered non-collectible (High R.8), and the remaining six of which have rarity factors that range from R.4 to Low R.7. The present example presents remarkably well for the Good level of preservation. True, the wear is heavy with waning definition over the upper right reverse and much of the peripheral devices. On the other hand, the denomination ONE CENT is discernible, the obverse portrait is suitably well outlined, and the word LIBERTY is relatively clear. The date is barely discernible. There are no individually mentionable circulation marks, and the mostly smooth surfaces exhibit pleasing golden-brown patina. A coin that should have little trouble finding its way into an advanced collection of early copper. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
