1794<1/2 C> Small Edge Letters. C-7, B-7, High R.5. Die State 2--Damaged--NCS. VF Details. Good 5 EAC. High relief head; Vertical leaf pair below T. The die state is early in the Manley State 2 progression, and appears to qualify as Breen Die State II. A die crack through the E of UNITED has separated the reverse die into two different planes, almost suggesting a retained cud. The surfaces have intermingled dark olive and steel-brown color with numerous small abrasions, pit marks, and other blemishes, including a rather prominent old scratch through the digit 1 to the bust. The lower reverse shows a very slight bend. Breen listed 14 entries in his Condition Census, the final entry reading "Richard Shimkus collection. Very Fine." We do not know if he was referring to this coin or a different specimen. A number of examples have been discovered over the years. Cohen rated this R.6 and said it was almost R.7. Breen called it R.6 with 24 reported, stating that it may go down to R.5. More recently, Ron Manley rated the variety R.5, in this instance proving the forward thinking of Walter Breen.
Ex: Richard Shimkus; Roger S.
