1794 1/2 C MS62 Brown NGC. C-2a, B-2b, High R.2. Manle
1794 1/2 C MS62 Brown NGC. C-2a, B-2b, High R.2. Manley State 4; Breen State V. This late die state example has pleasing medium brown color with hints of orange, especially on the reverse. Some peripheral weakness can be seen on the reverse. Both sides have numerous tiny surface marks, nearly all that appear to be original planchet marks that were present before striking. Although the C-2a variety is one of the two most common die marriages of all 1794 half cents, examples are hard to locate in high grades. This piece is easily among the top dozen known for the variety.
The obverse represents the terminal die state for this variety. A die crack joins the tops of ERTY and continues, along with a parallel crack, through the right obverse field following the arc of the border, to about the level of Liberty's chin. These are extremely faint and probably not visible on any piece in lower grades. A ridge from the border intersects the top right corner of the Y and continues nearly to Liberty's nose. Breen called this a crack and Manley calls it a linear defect. Heavy clash marks are evident along Liberty's profile and behind the head. Finally, rim crumbling is evident in the border dentils above ER.
The reverse, also appearing on C-9, is in its early state on this example, with no evidence of rim crumbling that appeared in later states of C-9. Two faint die cracks are evident on this example, one joining the tops of TE in UNITED and the other joining the tops of AM, and neither are mentioned in the literature.
