1793 Chain 1C Periods XF40 NGC.
1793 Chain 1C Periods XF40 NGC. S-4, B-5, High R.3. While an uneven strike obliterates much of the date, the word LIBERTY on the obverse is bold and distinct with the following period clearly evident. The upper obverse border is prominent while the lower border is entirely absent. Little evidence of a reverse border remains. The surfaces are remarkably smooth, with only a few microscopic blemishes, although a small scrape is visible below the N of UNITED on the reverse. Chocolate-brown surfaces exhibit splashes of darker steel color. The die state of this piece is difficult to determine, due to the uneven strike and slight roughness near the left obverse border. All known examples have some evidence of a die crack from the left obverse border at about 7 o'clock to the hair, with a branch toward the date. The crack from the border to hair appears to be present on this piece, but it is virtually invisible.
In his Large Cent Encyclopedia, Walter Breen described a blundered obverse die with the R of LIBERTY "apparently corrected from a B." Due to the characteristics of the strike, with LIBERTY bold, this die characteristic can be studied closely. Indeed, there is a curved line inside the bottom of the R, although it does not appear to be a previous B. Instead, we believe that strike characteristics caused this appearance (Bolender described a similar appearance as "bifurcation" on the early dollars).
