1793 Chain<1C> Periods VG Details, Corroded, NCS. S-4, High R.3. Chocolate brown surfaces with tan highlights. Both the obverse and reverse show pronounced porosity, consistent with many years of burial. The presently offered piece may well have been discovered by someone with a metal detector. On the obverse, both LIBERTY and the date are legible, while the major design features of Liberty's portrait are visible. On the reverse the legend and denomination are legible and the chain-link circle is clear. The Chain Cent was the first copper coinage issue struck for circulation at the U.S. Mint. The designs are attributed by Walter Breen to Henry Voigt.
