<B>1793 Chain 1C Periods VF25 PCGS.</B></I> S-4, B-5, R.3. Breen Die State III. A nicely detailed example of this well known Chain cent variety. All legends are sharp, Liberty's eye and mouth are clear, and substantial inner hair definition remains. The medium to deep brown surfaces are moderately abraded, and the rims exhibit a few minor dings, but granularity is limited and the eye appeal is considerable for a Chain cent, which is typically encountered in well worn and problematic condition. PCGS has certified 19 Chain cents as Poor 1, an indication of how long these pieces persisted in Early American circulation. Little thought was given to collecting Large cents by date (much less by variety) until the 1850s, when they were replaced by the smaller diameter Flying Eagle cent.
