1793 Chain 1C Periods AU55 PCGS. S-4, B-5, High R.3. D
1793 Chain 1C Periods AU55 PCGS. S-4, B-5, High R.3. Die State II. Periods after LIBERTY and the date appear on this variety, and the reverse legend is completely spelled out as UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The date and LIBERTY are each quite crowded. The L and B are too low, and the LI nearly touch. The R in LIBERTY was apparently corrected from a B--a condition that is quite clear on the present example, looking much like a B with an extra protrusion on the right side.
The Breen large cent Encyclopedia makes an interesting observation regarding this variety. "On this obverse die, the hair is so differently treated from the rest as to suggest a different engraver. Perhaps this was a sample die by Joseph Wright leading to the engravership. Wright's 1792 pattern quarter obverse has a similarly soft treatment of the hair, and a period after LIBERTY. But if Wright did this, why is there no record of his part-time employment before appointment as engraver?"
This coin shows that soft, feminine hair treatment to particularly good advantage, due to its near-Mint State grade. Those tresses show only a touch of highpoint rub. A large, irregular planchet flaw shows to the left of the L in LIBERTY, traveling downward onto the hair of Liberty. The small crack from the rim to the lower locks is plain and extends into the hair. Another crack points toward the date. Yet a third crack extends from RTY to the nearby period. A single mentionable abrasion is noted in the right obverse field before Liberty's eye, while the reverse is choice, bold, and distraction-free. Perusal with a loupe otherwise reveals only light evidence of contact. The surfaces are medium olive-brown, and there are no unsightly rim bumps or bruises. PCGS has graded three examples of the 1793 Chain Periods cents in AU55, exceeded only by a single MS65 specimen.
