1793 Chain[1C] AMERICA VF25 NGC.
1793 Chain<1C> AMERICA VF25 NGC. S.3, Low R.3. Dies for the Chain cents were prepared by Henry Voigt who was the chief coiner at the mint. On February 9, 1795, Elias Boudinot reported to Congress on the state of the Mint, including "The present state and progress of the works." Much of his report was an answer to objections that the Mint was not producing enough coins to justify its existence. In this report, he stated: "The buildings were all to be completed before the works could be begun. The lots on which the same are built, from a principle of economy, were so restricted in size, that they are now found to be much too small, and so insufficient as greatly to hinder the several operations, and delay the business. It was also a considerable time before an engraver could be engaged, during which, the chief coiner was obliged to make the dies for himself, and yet the dies are subject to frequent failures by breaking. Great delays have also taken place for want of a refiner and melter, provision for such an office having been wholly omitted in the law instituting the mint, by which, the present stock of copper remains useless and unproductive." Boudinot's comments confirm the attribution of these dies to Henry Voigt. Not long after Boudinot's report, he was selected as the new Director of the Mint, a position he would hold for several years.
This is a pleasing mid-grade Chain cent for the date or type collector. The surfaces have typical abrasions expected at this grade level, although none are severe. Pleasing medium brown color with good eye appeal. Sheldon-3 is the single most available Chain cent although it can hardly be considered common. The other four varieties are rarer still, with one of these being semi-unique.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
