1793 Chain 1C AMERICA--Corroded--NCS. AU Details. S-3,
1793 Chain<1C> AMERICA--Corroded--NCS. AU Details. S-3, B-4, Low R.3. The R is high and comparatively close to the T, diagnostic for this popular Chain cent marriage. The ebony-brown fields are mildly to moderately granular, with a small rougher area at 4 o'clock on the obverse. An obverse rim ding is noted at 10 o'clock, and the rim is thickened near 11:30 and opposite on the reverse near 6:30. Clashmarks of the chin along the profile are present, and typical of sharper Sheldon-3 examples. Light wear on Liberty's cheek and ear indicates brief circulation. Struck for only a few months in 1793, the Chain cent was quickly replaced by the Wreath cent, perhaps because of contemporary criticism of the chain device.
