1793 Chain<1C> AMERICA--Corroded--ANACS. XF40 Details. S-3, B-4, Low R.3. The popular "Leaning R" variety, although others identify the variety by the date spacing of "1 7 93." Sheldon-3 is not especially rare as a die variety, but most survivors exhibit heavy wear and porosity. Often, the portrait is visible only as a ghostly outline, while all that remains of the reverse is the chain. Attribution must be made from what fragments of the legend emerge once the piece is bathed with light. The present piece, however, has full, sharp legends, and Liberty's hair and eye retain most of their original detail. The medium brown surfaces are faintly granular and lightly pitted, but this is also an improvement over the rough, oxidized texture often encountered. Marks are limited to a pair of minor rim nicks at 1 and 7 o'clock on the reverse. EAC 15.
From The Antigo Collection, Part Two.
