1793 Chain<1C> AMERICA--Corroded--ANACS. XF Details, Net VF20. S-2, High R.4. Die State II, the chain design is lightly clashed beneath the bust. Sheldon-2 has the widest date of the Chain Cent obverses, and is also the rarest Chain Cent variety except for the extremely rare NC-1. Of course, any Chain Cent with the sharpness of the present piece is noteworthy. For most survivors of the variety, the date and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are hardly legible. On this piece, however, Liberty's hair tresses are exquisitely rendered and the peripheral legends bold. Most of the piece has smooth, light brown color. However, the borders have areas of rough surface, notably on the obverse between 3 and 6 o'clock and 7 to 10 o'clock. A faint and relatively unimportant pinscratch is above Liberty's cheekbone, other lesser and inconspicuous marks are found upon close inspection on the neck and below the bust. An affordable piece for the collector who desires a highly detailed example of this historic early type.
