1793 Chain 1C AMERI. Fine 12 PCGS. S-1, R.4. This variety is generally considered to be the first Chain cent produced at the Philadelphia Mint, probably in March of that year. Consequently, their desirability as a one-year type coin and a key issue among early cent specialists is only heightened by their historical significance. This glossy medium brown example is a trifle flat on the portrait and displays bold definition on the chain and denomination, a diagnostic of this sought-after type. A bit of patchy roughness is also noted on the obverse, as well as several ancient scratches. The most obvious of these is a long, curved mark that begins below Liberty's eye, extends across the portrait, and circles around to Liberty's lower curls.
