1793 Chain 1C AMERI. AU50 NGC. S-1, R.4. Presumab
1793 Chain<1C> AMERI. AU50 NGC. S-1, R.4. Presumably, the engraver laid out AMERICA last, and realized that the legend would appear unbalanced unless the nation's name was abbreviated. The unique reverse legend identifies this variety as the first Cent issue struck at the first Philadelphia Mint. AMERICA is spelled out in full on the only other known Chain Cent reverse die, used to strike Sheldon-2, 3, 4, and NC-1.
This imposing representative displays most of the fine details within Liberty's hair, and all other design elements and legends are bold. The strike is even and well centered. Chocolate-brown in color with hints of slightly deeper mahogany toning about the letters and within the chain links. There are four faint, thin, and parallel roller marks on the reverse; these are as made and were on the planchet prior to the strike. Only three pinscratches are found, these are on the cheek, the forehead, and the field near the mouth. No other marks are present. The edges and fields are smooth and attractive.
An old collector's paper envelope, inscribed "1793 Chain Ameri" accompanies the lot, as does a small gray and gold cardboard box in which the Cent may have reposed for many years. Population: 1 in 50, 2 finer (6/05).
Ex: Hogan Pond Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, 3/05), lot 1120, which realized $40,250. The ANR cataloger suggests the piece may have been in Barney Bluestone's 9/40 sale as lot 1024.
