1793<1C> Wreath Cent--Vine and Bars--XF45 PCGS. S-9, R.2. After many complaints about his Chain design, David Rittenhouse ordered a new design, resulting in the Wreath design with coinage in April 1793. According to the current Guide Book, Henry Voigt did the new design, although Walter Breen claimed that this was not the case. His reasoning was a difference in style from the Chain cents. Researcher R.W. Julian disagreed, suggesting that Voigt did the Wreath cent design, possibly with the assistance of Adam Eckfeldt. Regardless of the designer, the Wreath cents are the most widely available of the three types of 1793 cent coinage. This example is an attractive specimen with light brown color and wisps of darker olive toning. A few typical handling marks are consistent with the grade. The reverse has prominent parallel die cracks at the lower right. EAC 25.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
