1793<1C> Liberty Cap VF30 PCGS. S-13, B-20, High R.3. Six different die varieties of the 1793 Liberty Cap issue are known, used to produce 11,056 coins. The entire mintage was accomplished from the use of four obverse dies and two reverse dies, or an average of 2,764 coins per obverse and 5,528 coins per reverse die. Joseph Wright designed the Liberty Cap motif for the cent, and he and his assistants began making the six dies necessary for the coinage. Wright's design vaguely recalled the Libertas Americana Medal. The entire mintage was struck and then delivered on September 18, only a few days after Wright died of the yellow fever. The exact date is not known, but it is understood that Wright passed away on September 12 or 13 of that year.
This example is remarkable for its overall quality. The smooth medium brown and tan surfaces have only a few minor scratches and abrasions. Both sides have a full border, consisting of small beads rather than dentils of the later large cents. Although not perfect, and very few of these 200 year old coins are, this is an excellent quality example, probably well into the top 20 for the variety.
