1793<1C> Liberty Cap VF20 PCGS. S-13, Low R.4. Just 11,056 Liberty Cap cents were coined in early September 1793, all being delivered by Henry Voigt in a single delivery dated September 18. This was the design of Joseph Wright, the talented artist and engraver who had just begun his employment at the Mint a few weeks earlier. His employment would prove to be all too short, for Wright became an early victim of the yellow fever plague, losing the battle on September 12 or 13, 1793. This was most unfortunate, for Wright was destined to be an important figure in American coinage. Although he developed the device punch for the Liberty Cap cent design, and produced the first dies for these coins, Wright probably never saw any of the actual coins before he died.
Six different die varieties are known for the 1793 Liberty Cap cents, and the S-13 die marriage is the most plentiful of these, thus an excellent choice for date collectors and first year type collectors, even though only about 200 examples are known. The total population for all 1793 Liberty Cap cent varieties is only about 300 coins.
This example is a pleasing representative with excellent surfaces, much smoother than usually encountered. Both sides have medium olive-brown color with considerable lighter tan. A few tiny rim bumps are noted, as well as a small pit mark behind the hair curls. Otherwise, the surfaces are smooth and attractive. This is a highly desirable example that will be fully appreciated by its new owner. EAC 6.
