A beautiful example of the nation's first officially authorized silver coin, a coin whose story includes both President Washington and Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State in Washington's cabinet. It is a coin whose popularity never ebbs let alone is forgotten. Splendid dove gray with lovely toning showing subtle highlights of gold and pale blue in the fields. Glossy overall, a bit reflective in the fields, and free of major problems. PCGS #2637761 for those who like to keep tabs on the provenance of America's great rarities. No obvious adjustment marks are present. As someone noted a few years ago when referencing this 1792 issue, it is truly unusual how a group of workers, inexperienced in working with precious metal coinage to a specified weight standard, could produce both planchets and strike finished coins of such excellence -- compare this piece to some world issues from mints hundreds of years old and the quality becomes clear. Details like the hair, dentils, and wing feathers are nicely defined. This piece has superior eye appeal as well, which goes a long way toward explaining the high About Uncirculated 50 grade assigned by PCGS.
