1792 Receipt for a New Chair at Mount Vernon.
<B>1792 Receipt for a New Chair at Mount Vernon.</B></I> Signed: "<I>William Cox</B></I>", one page, 9" x 4", np, June 1, 1792. The receipt reads in full: "<I>Rec'd. June 1, 1792 of Tobias Lear Five Shillings & Six pence in full for a Chair for a Writing Desk. - William Cox.</B></I>" In addition, the reverse has a docket notation: "<I>Rec. For making of a Chair for the Office - 5/6 - June 1, 1792.</B></I>" There is a third notation on the opposite end reading: "<I>No. 322 - Receipt Wm Cox - 5/6 - 1st June 1792</B></I>". The chair could have been purchased for George Washington's study, and it was certainly made for use at Mount Vernon, likely still sitting at Washington's writing desk to be viewed and admired by the public even today! Tobias Lear was Washington's personal secretary from 1786 until Washington's death in 1799, and it is said that Lear held Washington's hand as he died. The receipt is in fine condition, with some toning and ink erosion along the two fold lines, which partially affects some of the writing, and a small tear along both the horizontal fold and vertical fold.
