1792 Receipt for George Washington Paid by Samuel Fraunces. One page, 8" x 5", np, February 20, 1792. Original manuscript receipt for payment by "Samuel Francis" to Robert Coe for "4 Hearth and Plate brushes…" and "for President". It is signed "Robt. Coe" at the lower right and has been docketed on the verso, with names, dates, and materials, as well as the receipt number 309. "Samuel Francis" is likely Samuel Fraunces, a steward of Washington's and also the proprietor of the historic Fraunces Tavern in New York City. The tavern was originally the Queen's Head Tavern, and served as a meeting place for the Sons of Liberty and also for British officers when they occupied the city. It was in the Long Room of this tavern that George Washington bade farewell to his officers. The receipt is in fine condition, with some edge wear and fold splitting on the left and right edges. The right edge also appears to have some burn damage, affecting some of the calculations. Overall this document is still quite suitable for display.
