1792 Receipt - Isaac Catts Repairs at Mt. Vernon
1792 Receipt to Isaac Catts for Repairs at Mount Vernon. One page, 7.5" x 3.5", np, nd. This is an original receipt for payment by "Mr. Francois to Isaac Catts Dr.", for mending various tubs at Mount Vernon. It is signed on the bottom edge as "Isaac Catts", and the document refers to four different repair jobs, each one taking place between March 20th and April 13th, 1792. It has also been docketed on the back as "Rec. For Cooper's works - April 16, 1792 5/5", and was paid in full. "Mr. Francois" was likely Samuel Fraunces, one of Washington's personal stewards. He was also the proprietor of Fraunces Tavern in New York City, which was a meeting place for the Sons of Liberty as well as British officers during their occupation of the city. The receipt is in fine condition, with toning and staining that obscures the lower portion of the document somewhat. Catts' signature is affected but still legible, the lower edge is somewhat wrinkled and creased, the lower right corner is very dark and appears almost burnt, and some minor edge wear.
