1792<H10C> Half Disme, Judd-7, Pollock-7, R.4, AU50 NTC (XF DETAILS, REPAIRED). Minor repairs were made on the obverse of this piece, but fairly extensive repair work was done to the reverse. The obverse shows uneven detailing on the central design of Liberty, most especially on the upper hair and upper portion of the face. The reverse shows slight softness on the eagle and there are a few small planchet voids also in the center, a minted flaw that is seen on most of the half dismes we have encountered. Pinkish-blue and deeper gray toning is seen over each side. A few short scratches are located above Liberty's hair, there are a couple of shallow planchet voids in the center portion of the obverse, and a couple of very shallow scratches are positioned to the left and through the eagle's left wing on the reverse.
It is not known if the story of President Washington donating his silverware is an apocryphal one or not, but it is certain that the bullion for these coins originated with him. It is also known that the all the coins were delivered to Washington with Thomas Jefferson as an intermediary. Technically a pattern issue, half dismes are so well known to U.S. collectors and have been so actively pursued over the past 150 years that they are now considered an integral part of regular Federal coinage, a situation that is analogous to some 1856 Flying Eagle cents. While this coin has its technical problems, it is still a high grade and well defined example of this rare prototype from the first official coinage produced in the United States, and as such it is an important opportunity for the advanced type collector.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
